Comarcas of the Región de Murcia
These divisions are geographical rather than administrative
The Region of Murcia ( Costa Cálida) is subdivided into a number of “Comarcas” or areas, and these groupings often appear in reports relating to weather reports or agriculture.
Altiplano de Jumilla - Yecla: This covers the higher areas of North-west Murcia which are home to extensive grape production in Jumilla and Yecla.
Comarca de Lorca: This area is close to the coast starting in Águilas, and then moves slightly inland to the far end of the Guadalentín Valley taking in Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras.
Bajo Guadalentín: The lower end of the Guadalentín Valley and close to the coast : Aledo, Alhama de Murcia, Librilla, Mazarrón and Totana.
Campo de Cartagena - Mar Menor: Cartagena is not only a coastal port but also a large municipality, sprawling around one end of the Mar Menor and continuing right the way along almost to Puerto de Mazarrón. This flat area is warm and close to the coast, and is extensively farmed. It includes Los Alcázares, Cartagena, Fuente Álamo de Murcia, San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar, Torre Pacheco and La Unión.
Área metropolitana de Murcia: The metropolitan area surrounding Murcia capital. Fertile and flat, this area is transversed by the River Segura and includes Alcantarilla, Alguazas, Beniel, Murcia, Molina de Segura, Las Torres de Cotillas and Santomera.
Noroeste: The North-west is higher than central Murcia and the coast and has both extensive areas of forest, as well as dry flatlands which are farmed without irrigation. This area includes Bullas, Calasparra, Caravaca de la Cruz, Cehegín and Moratalla.
Cuenca de Abanilla - Fortuna: Abanilla and Fortuna.
Cuenca de Mula: Albudeite, Campos del Río, Mula and Pliego.
Vega del Segura: Along the course of the River Segura, Abarán, Archena, Blanca, Ceutí, Cieza, Lorquí, Ojós, Ricote, Ulea and Villanueva del Segura.
