ARCHIVED - Covid cases amongst under 19s exceeds other age groups in Alicante
The younger age group has the highest incidence rate in the Valencia region's three provinces, including Alicante.
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate in Valencia region has now reached 593 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and, for the first time since the start of the pandemic, the highest number of new infections has been detected amongst 12 to 19 year-olds.
This younger age group now has an incidence rate of 1,425 cases per 100,000, followed by young people aged 20 to 29, with a rate of 1,420 - almost three times higher than the regional average.
In its latest update on Monday, the region's Ministry of Health reported 3,193 new cases of coronavirus (259 less than on Saturday) and three more Covid-related deaths, meaning 7,502 people have lost their lives since the start of the pandemic.
And the fifth wave is taking its toll on the health service, with 731 people currently hospitalised due to Covid, with 113 of these patients in a critical condition in intensive care units.
To try to curb the spread of the virus amongst young people, the region's Ministry of Health plans to complete the vaccination of young people this month with an additional 580,000 doses of vaccine.
But these are earmarked for those aged 20 to 29-year-old with a view to immunising younger people in September as is the case in the Basque Country, although vaccine appointments available for over 12s are available this week in Alhama de Murcia.
