ARCHIVED - Covid passport may be extended to mid-February: Andalusia Covid update January 20
Health Minister claims the hospital pressure and high death rate in Andalucía show how dangerous the situation still is
14-day incidence rate in Andalucía since March 2020
According to Minister of Health, Jesús Aguirre, the most reliable data on the evolution of the pandemic are hospital admissions and deaths. As there is still pressure on healthcare and an increase in the number of deaths, the situation is still too serious to relax restrictions in Andalucía like they’re doing in Catalonia and Cantabria.
According to Mr Aguirre, the current incidence rate is not a reliable figure and is not very demonstrative of the real state of Covid in the region because there are many people who take rapid tests and don’t report the positive results.
Next week the committee of experts in Andalucía will meet and probably agree on an extension of the use of the Covid passport to enter into bars and restaurants for at least 15 more days. It will currently be obligatory to show a Covid pass until the end of January.
New infections
On Thursday January 20, Andalucía recorded the highest daily number of Covid-19 infections of this sixth wave of the pandemic with 17,548, 10,032 more than the previous day and 6,371 more than on Thursday of last week.
The 17,548 positives this Thursday are the highest number of the last week after the 7,416 of Wednesday, the 9,703 of Tuesday, the 16,498 infections on Monday (48 hours), the 10,886 of Saturday, the 14,002 of Friday and the 11,177 of last Thursday.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate per 100,000 inhabitants has increased by 42 points to 1,407 after falling for the last two days.
Hospitalisations
The number of people hospitalised with coronavirus in Andalusia has risen by 52 in the last day to 2,143, of whom 238 are in the ICU, eight more than on Wednesday.
It’s worth pointing out that 70% of those admitted to the ICU are not vaccinated.
Deaths
In the last 24 hours, 31 people have died, which is three more than yesterday.
Vaccinations
In Andalucía, 82.8% of people over 5 years of age – 7,012,452 people – have been fully vaccinated and 88.2% – 7,466,290 people – have had their first jab.
