ARCHIVED - Covid restrictions are leading to more illegal street parties in Cartagena
Street parties are becoming uncontrollable in the municipality of Cartagena, Murcia
The current Covid restrictions in the Region of Murcia prohibit non-essential businesses from opening past 1am, meaning that hundreds of partygoers, mainly teens and young adults, are left with nowhere to go after the bars close. The result is an increasing number of street parties or ‘botellones’, especially in the city of Cartagena, where the authorities are struggling to cope with the unruly youngsters.
These botellones, in addition to being illegal, cause nearby neighbours to lose sleep due to the loud music and, normally, municipal workers are left to clean up the mess of bottles, plastic bags and disposable cups the following morning.
Due to the increasing number of these gatherings, the authorities in Cartagena have asked the hospitality sector, neighbourhood associations and parents to help come up with alternatives to this antisocial behaviour.
A representative from the hospitality sector has stated that the legal consequences for participating in botellones should be increased in order to make youngsters understand the need to “maintain harmony among business owners, clients and neighbours”. He went on to state that the hospitality sector also holds some responsibility in preventing this kind of activity and that suitable alternatives need to be found.
Covid restrictions in the Region of Murcia, which are some of the strictest in Spain, are also having another negative effect for the hospitality sector: customers are travelling into other provinces, such as Alicante, to enjoy a night out with fewer restrictions.
