ARCHIVED - Dangerous German fugitive wanted for murder arrested in Alicante
The detainee had been hiding out in Albir in the Marina Baixa area of Alicante province to avoid jail in his home country
An “extremely violent” German fugitive accused of murder in his home country has been arrested in Albir.
The suspect, together with four accomplices, allegedly rammed a vehicle, occupied by four men, off the road in the German city of Eberswalde in 2009 following a lengthy chase.
Once the vehicle was off the road, the fugitive and other attackers, all wearing balaclavas, took machetes, knives, baseball bats and iron bars from the boot of their car, and repeatedly hit and stabbed the victims, killing one and seriously injuring the others.
A European Arrest Warrant for Extradition was issued by the German authorities in mid-August 2021, and officers from the Provincial Judicial Police Brigade of Alicante worked together with the Fugitive Unit of the General Commissariat of Judicial Police to locate the suspect after it was discovered he could be in hiding on the Costa Blanca.
The German, described as “an extremely violent person”, was finally traced to a home in Albir and a “wide-ranging” operation was set up to arrest him.
The 35-year-old, who has a previous record for similar acts in Spain, has appeared before the Central Court of Instruction in Alicante and been remanded in custody awaiting extradition.
