DaVinci robot installed in new Camposol hospital shows its worth elsewhere in the Region of Murcia
DaVinci surgical robots similar to that installed in the new Camposol private hospital have carried out over 700 surgeries in the region in the first half of the year
The DaVinci model surgical robot installed in the new Camposol private hospital, which opened its accident and emergency department in early August and will open the rest of the departments when administrative procedures are complete, is part of a collection of the same model robots that have been in operation for some years elsewhere in the Region.
The robotic surgery units in the Region of Murcia have already exceeded 3,000 operations using this technology, since DaVinci robots were incorporated into the operating rooms of regional public hospitals in October 2021.
These devices offer image quality that facilitates access in complex surgeries and complicated anatomies.
As of June of this year, 730 surgical interventions were already counted, most of them in Urology, General Surgery and Gynaecology, although the use of DaVinci also extends to head and neck surgeries. In addition, work is being done so that robotic surgery will soon be extended to thoracic, paediatric and cardiac surgery.
The robotic surgery equipment is installed in the Virgen de la Arrixaca, Reina Sofía and Morales Meseguer hospitals in Murcia and Santa Lucía in Cartagena and represents great advantages over other surgical techniques.
"The incorporation of these robots has undoubtedly meant a leap in quality," said the managing director of the Murcian Health Service (SMS), Isabel Ayala, who explained that "the impact on the patient is very important since, as it is a much less invasive and more precise approach to surgery, recovery is better and faster."
Patient-focused technology investment
The SMS invested about 10 million euros in the acquisition of four robots. DaVinci allow the surgeon not to operate directly but to virtually handle forceps that reproduce with maximum precision the movements made by the doctor.
In this regard, Ayala stated that "it is an important commitment of the SMS to investment in technology focused on the well-being of the patient".
Three years ago, the Reina Sofía hospital performed the first operation on a patient suffering from prostate cancer. Since then, and until June of this year, it has performed almost 900 surgeries, and so far this year it has registered 157 operations.
Since its commissioning, the unit installed at the Vírgen de la Arrixaca hospital has exceeded a thousand interventions applying this technology, and from January to June 2024 it has counted more than 200 operations.
The figures are similar to those carried out this year by the Santa Lucía hospital, which, since the technology was installed in the centre, has carried out more than 750 surgeries with DaVinci robots. For its part, the Morales Meseguer hospital in Murcia has more than 500 interventions, most of them in Urology.
