ARCHIVED - Denia nursing home for the elderly without hot water for three days
Staff at the council-run Santa Llúcia residence in the Marina Alta were forced to heat pans of water to wash with over the weekend
A boiler broke down at Denia's Santa Llúcia municipal nursing home last Friday January 14, leaving elderly residents and staff without hot water for three days.
In some cases, relatives took residents home so that they could have a shower, but in the meantime, staff spent the weekend boiling pans of cold water to wash with as temperatures dropped across the province.
A comment on social media reportedly claims the nursing home had to deal with the "inconvenience" of only having cold water for "approximately 15 days". However, the town hall denies this, and has assured that the breakdown occurred on Friday and was repaired on Monday.
According to Denia's Councillor for Territory and Urban Quality, Maria Josep Ripoll, the boiler could not be repaired earlier "because it was the weekend".
Her department is responsible for the maintenance of municipal facilities, and the councillor said she has requested a report on the condition of the boiler in case further repairs or replacement are necessary "to ensure there is no repeat of the problems that occurred over the weekend".
