DGT announces hefty fine for common traffic violation in Spain
The traffic authorities are cracking down on ‘reckless driving’ in Spain
It’s pretty common knowledge by now that the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) doesn’t take any prisoners when it comes to traffic fines and has refocused its efforts in recent years to deter drivers from breaking the rules of the road. What might come as a surprise, however, is that the DGT is now cracking down on a well-known violation that could land drivers with a hefty sanction of 500 euros.
One common mistake that drivers make and that the DGT is keeping an eye out for is not observing an adequate safety distance from the car in front. To make the calculation more straight-forward for drivers, the traffic authorities have published an easy-to-remember little trick. First, choose a stationary landmark on the road, such as a bollard or traffic sign. If the vehicle in front has time to reach it while you recite “one thousand one hundred one, one thousand one hundred two” it means you are maintaining an adequate safety distance. If not, it’s time to slow down.
Si no se mantiene la distancia, en caso de frenada brusca se produciría una colisión en cadena y al ser vehículos pesados los daños serían aún más graves.

The DGT is at pains to highlight how important this rule is, since driving too close to the car in front often means that there isn’t enough stoppage time if drivers have to brake suddenly; it is even more important when it is raining or if the road surface is compromised.
“If the distance is not maintained, in the event of sudden braking, a chain collision would occur and, in the case of heavy vehicles, the damage would be even more serious,” the DGT tweeted, adding that the penalty for this kind of reckless driving is a fine of 500 euros and 6 licence points.
