ARCHIVED - DGT announces plans for new radars and drones on roads in Spain
Traffic authorities will implement new measures to cut down on road traffic accidents in Spain
As part of the Spanish Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030, authorities are determined to crack down on the number of serious and fatal traffic accidents in this country. To this end, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has implemented a number of new safety measures, the latest of which is the addition of new drones and radar devices from next year.
Specifically, the DGT will install 16 section radars and 10 more fixed radars, the head of the traffic authority, Pere Navarro, announced during the Commission on Road Safety of the Congress of Deputies on Tuesday November 16.
The 26 new radars will be added to the 780 devices currently placed throughout the country.
As part of the Road Safety Strategy for this year and next, the DGT has also implemented measures such as a 30km per hour speed limit on single lane streets and eliminating the 20km per hour margin for overtaking on secondary roads. In addition, a range of new regulations will be imposed on electric scooter users including the implementation of compulsory insurance.
