DGT warning and possible fine for playing music in cars in Spain
The Traffic authorities in Spain have advised drivers to only listen to certain types of music
Since the introduction of the new Traffic Law in March this year, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has really focused in on cutting down on the number of distractions behind the wheel that could lead to an accident. Answering the phone while driving and using a GPS system incorrectly now both carry hefty fines, but the Traffic authorities have caused quite a stir by advising motorists about the type of music they should listen to whilst driving.
Twitter lit up when the DGT posted a warning about music in the car. If drivers insist on playing music, the message suggested that it should always be played at a “moderate volume” and that motorists choose a genre that doesn’t make them sleepy, doesn’t result in aggressive or defensive behaviour and that won’t take their attention off the road.
Si la música te acompaña al volante, mejor que la uses a un volumen moderado y que elijas un ritmo que:

âŒNo te adormezca.
âŒNo te fomente una actitud defensiva o agresiva.

Unsurprisingly, the post was met with dozens of disparaging responses, with the majority accusing the DGT of trying to control every aspect of driving and seeking novel ways of extracting more fines from motorists.
However, the message is clear: Tráfico considers music as another possible distraction for drivers, which could impair their concentration and result in an accident. Since many of us regularly listen to music on our phones, it’s important to remember that even the simple act of holding a phone behind the wheel will cost 200 euros and a loss of 6 licence points.
Therefore, it’s advisable to set up a playlist before starting the engine and where possible, use voice assistants or multifunction steering wheels to change the radio station or stop the music.
