ARCHIVED - DGT to make black boxes mandatory in cars in Spain
The new initiative will begin to be rolled out in Spain next year
As part of an EU initiative to reduce road traffic accidents and collect data to prevent future tragedies, the DGT in Spain will begin installing black boxes in all new vehicles from next year. The measure will be implemented at the same time as the new anti-start breathalysers come into force on July 6 of 2022 and will be compulsory in all new cars leaving the dealerships within two years.
The black box is similar to that used in aircraft and will be bolted under the driver’s seat to record all significant data that can be used by investigators in the event of an accident. To protect private information, the device will not record sound or images. What will be available for analysis are steering movements, acceleration or deceleration and the operation of seatbelts among other things.
If a road traffic accident does occur, all information generated by the vehicle in the 30 seconds prior to the event and the five seconds after will be available. However, in line with EU regulations, data will only be recorded in more serious accidents where the airbag is deployed.
Brussels is confident that the black box will contribute greatly to Vision Zero – a commitment by Spain and other EU countries to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries by 2050. The data collected from such accidents, which will be kept completely anonymous, will be used to “carry out road safety analyzes and evaluate the effectiveness of specific measures that have been adopted, without the possibility of identifying the owner or the owner of a specific vehicle”.
The EU has estimated that these safety systems will prevent 25,000 road deaths and 140,000 serious injuries in the next 15 years alone.
