ARCHIVED - Dolphins at play in Torrevieja bay
A recreational boat spotted the pod of dolphins and calves off the Vega Baja coast in Alicante.
Sightings of groups of bottlenose dolphins off the Costa Blanca are becoming increasingly frequent, and viewers with a camera to hand can sometimes capture some spectacular images for those of us unable to see them up close to enjoy.
Joaquín Carrión was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time last week and managed to record a memorable video of a group of these extraordinary creatures with their calves in the bay of Torrevieja. The images were shared by Proyecto Maestral social media inTorrevieja.
Dolphins often follow in boats’ wakes, and in recent years population numbers are believed to have grown off the coasts of southern Alicante and the north of Murcia. Researchers suggest that the dolphins are attracted by shoals of fish around the aquaculture facilities in the areas.
