ARCHIVED - Eagerly-awaited Easter celebrations will return to Orihuela after two years on hold
Semana Santa festivities will take place in the Vega Baja town from April 10 to 17
Easter Week processions and festivities will make a welcome return to the streets of Orihuela after two years of cancellations due to the Covid pandemic.
The Town Hall unveiled the official Semana Santa 2022 poster, featuring the image of Saint Verónica, at Madrid's Fitfur tourism fair this week, and stressed the importance of the Easter celebrations in Orihuela.
"We are excited that Semana Santa processions will return to the streets and are proud that Holy Week in Orihuela has been declared of International Tourist Interest".
Earlier in the week, the annual Sicted Tourism Distinction Awards were held at the Madrid fair, and Orihuela's La Barraca Restaurant took second prize in the category for 'Most Outstanding Sicted Tourism Service Improvement Plan' for the construction of a new kitchen in line with the productivity, environmental and production quality criteria.
Organisers of the Arena 1,000 beach handball championship, held every year on Orihuela's coastline, also announced the return of the event from July 22 to 24 at the tourism fair.
The event attracts thousands of people and is considered a benchmark of both sporting and tourist attractions.
And the Town Hall presented its new tourist promotional video entitled 'Discover Orihuela, the birthplace of Miguel Hernandez', along with train and hotel packages at affordable prices.
