ARCHIVED - Elche unveils new heavy duty beach cleaning fleet
Elche brings in the big guns again to keep its coastline clean in the Baix Vinalopo comarca of Alicante province.
Elche has reinforced its beach maintenance and cleaning services with a fleet of modern, heavy-duty machinery (recently the municipality also invested into heavy-duty mosquito busting equipment!).
The 9 km coastline will be cleaned at 11pm every night until September 30 following a "substantial investment" in three tractors, four beach cleaning machines, five electric SUVs, a container lorry and four new large refuse containers with a capacity of 20 cubic metres each.
The nightly cleaning period has been extended for a couple of weeks until the end of September "to keep the beaches in the best possible condition for residents and visitors" for a longer period of time this year as the municipality - just 19 km from Alicante-Elche Airport on the Costa Blanca - hopes to capitalise on a relaxation of international travel restrictions.
In addition, 180 extra bins will be placed along the coastline, and the beaches are now all smoke-free.
As such, beach goers are reminded that the "harmful effect of cigarette butts on the environment is substantial" and the public is asked to "avoid littering the beaches with any type of waste of at all".
