ARCHIVED - EU Digital Covid certificates to be issued by regional authorities in Spain
The post-pandemic travel certificate looks set to come into effect in July
As international travel gradually resumes throughout Europe and an ever-larger proportion of the population receives coronavirus immunization vaccines, the topic of Covid travel certificates is becoming one of more and more immediate concern, and Spain’s Ministry of Health has announced that the responsibility for issuing these permits will lie with regional authorities.
The digital Covid “green” certificates will be produced in each of Spain’s 17 Autonomous Communities, and Carolina Darias, the Minister for Health, reports that full technical support will be given by central government. She adds that the plans drawn up in Spain have already been partly approved by the EU, and it is expected that the rules for travel and certificates will be announced in the week beginning 7th June, coming into force by 1st July.
Essentially, the Covid certificate will allow free movement within the EU for three categories of travellers: those who can show a recent negative PCR test, those who have recently recovered from Covid and those who are fully vaccinated.
On Wednesday the future EU Digital Covid Certificate successfully negotiated its first hurdle in the European Parliament, being endorsed by 52 votes to 13 with 3 abstentions.
