ARCHIVED - Exhausted Portuguese pigeons thrown off track by storms turn up in Galicia
Police in Vigo, Galicia, have warned the local population to keep an eye out for disorientated birds, which have been appearing all over the region as well as in Asturias.
Dozens of carrier pigeons that were taking part in a race between the Algarve and Oporto have been showing up hungry and exhausted in Galicia over the last few days. The birds are reported to have been thrown off track by storms over the Atlantic, which led to some 3,000 of the 10,000 competition pigeons being reported as lost.
Pigeon racing is a highly popular sport in Portugal, with many of the birds involved worth upwards of 3,000 euros.
Anyone in northern Spain who comes across birds with Portuguese rings in the coming days is asked to contact the authorities to return them to their owners!.
