ARCHIVED - Festive ninots placed on recycling igloos to celebrate Fogueres de San Juan in Alicante
The creations by local artists are on display across Alicante city centre until Sunday, June 27.
A dozen ninots have been placed on top of glass recycling igloos in Alicante on the Costa Blanca to bring festive cheer to the city which, for the second year running, won't celebrate its traditional Fogueres de San Juan bonfires and street festivities due to the pandemic.
Fogueres de San Juan is of the most important events in Alicante's calendar, a festival of noise and light similar to the Fallas of Valencia, but as was the case in 2020, celebrations have been dampened amid fears of overcrowding.
But in a bid to create a "festive atmosphere" while raising awareness about glass recycling, traditional satirical figures have been erected on green igloos in strategic and most visited locations across the city as part of a joint initiative between the council and Ecovidrio.
The official inauguration took place in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento on Thursday, June 17, with the unveiling of two ninots, including 'an Alicante bride' by local foguerer artist Federico Molinero.
"These recycling containers are located in some of the most significant and most visited points in Alicante to impregnate a festive atmosphere in such an unusual year," said the local authority, adding that the idea is also to "help these artists who are struggling so much due to the pandemic".
Other ninots can be found in:
