ARCHIVED - Fire destroys barn of straw bales in San Javier
The blaze occurred alongside the Miranda-Sucina RM-F23 road
Heavy machinery was brought in to help bring a fire in a barn of straw bales under control in the San Javier municipality on Saturday morning.
A call to the Emergency Coordination Center reported the fire, indicating that the agricultural storage and working area was located on the Miranda-Sucina RM-F23 road alongside the Trasvase Tajo-Segura canal channel; it was easy to see where the fire was burning due to the large pall of smoke, clearly visible from surrounding areas.
Firefighters from the regional CEIS firefighters and the San Javier Local Police attended the call.
The straw was stored within an open-air barn, so was easily accessed and the worst of the fire extinguished rapidly.
However, due to the large volume of bulky straw affected, it was finally necessary to bring in a heavy duty excavator, which pulled out and spread the smouldering material so that it could be fully soaked and to make sure the fire didn´t reignite.
The fire was finally declared out at 16.00 in the afternoon.
The cause of the blaze is unknown.
