ARCHIVED - First Omicron case in Spain detected in Madrid
The patient has recently returned to Spain from South Africa

The microbiology department of the Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid has confirmed on Monday afternoon, November 29, that the first Spanish case of the Omicron coronavirus variant has been registered in a patient returning from South Africa.
“We have managed to set up an ultra-fast procedure that allows us to have the result in the same day. The patient is well,” confirmed the Marañón infectious laboratory on Twitter.
The Omicron variant originated in South Africa and has prompted Spain to suspend travel with the nation, in addition to prohibiting arrivals from the UK who are not double vaccinated.
