ARCHIVED - Foolish Costa Blanca driver ignores police flood warning and gets stuck in waist-high water
The driver ended up stranded in his Porsche after trying to drive through heavy rainwater at the mouth of the Rio Nacimiento in Orihuela Costa
A reckless motorist found himself stranded in waist-high water at the mouth of the Rio Nacimiento in Orihuela Costa after ignoring a police flood warning and attempting to plough through heavy rainwater despite the earlier rescue of a woman whose abandoned car was clearly visible.
Rather than follow a safer 2km diversion via the N332 to reach Cabo Roig, the feckless driver, who initially appeared to be hesitant in footage recorded by a bystander, put his foot to the pedal and tried to race across.
However, the inevitable happened, and the car came to a standstill metres from the other side.
The video has been shared through MeteOrihuela social networks, captioned: “Initially he thinks about it, he seemed to have decided not to cross, but then he changes his mind, he takes a risk. His car engine decides it has had enough as it comes to a halt just ahead of the end of the crossing.”
The foolhardy incident happened on Friday morning, November 11, in the Glea de Campoamor, shortly after a woman was rescued from her stranded car by Orihuela Local Police following downpours as the province was under yellow alert for torrential storms.
After the dramatic rescue, officers warned: “If there’s a stream or large amount of water and you can’t see the bottom, stop and turn around,” advice which was ignored by this particular ambitious motorist.
Campoamor on Alicante’s coast is a notorious flood plain, and residents have been campaigning for years for improvements to the infrastructure, which overflows each year, dragging away walkways and beach furniture.
