ARCHIVED - Forest fire in the Sierra Minera in Cartagena
Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control in less than an hour and a half
Firefighters affiliated to the Infomur Plan have successfully controlled a forest fire next to Mount Sancti Spiritu in the Sierra Minera, in the municipality of Cartagena.
According to sources from the Emergency Coordination Centre, the blaze was reported by the Guardia Civil at 12:12 on Wednesday and firefighters from the Consortium for Fire Extinction and Rescue of the Region of Murcia, as well as a unit of Civil Protection from the City Council of La Unión were the first on the scene.
They were joined by helicopter and ground support, and the fire was brought under control by 1.30 pm.
According to the 112 emergency services in Murcia, the risk of forest fires remains very high on Thursday, particularly in the Altiplano, the Mula Basin, the Guadalentín and the Northwest. There is a moderate risk on the southern coast of the Region while the threat remains low in the east.
According to data from the Ministry of Transparency, Participation and Public Administration, approximately twice the amount of land has been burned through forest fires in Murcia so far in 2021 as in the equivalent period last year, some 61.56 hectares compared with just 29.72 hectares in 2020.
