ARCHIVED - Four radical jihadists arrested in Murcia and Cadiz
Abundant extremist propaganda material has also been seized by the Spanish police
Officers from the National Police in Spain have detained four men on suspicion of terrorism in the Region of Murcia and in the Andalusian province of Cádiz.
The leader of the group was arrested in Algeciras, Cádiz, and is accused of terrorist recruitment and indoctrination for jihadist purposes, while three other extremists, who self-identified as “soldiers of the caliphate”, were detained in the Region of Murcia.
Police officers also carried out several property and vehicle raids and found a large quantity of radical propaganda material on different electronic devices. The leader of the group was said to have been using this material to indoctrinate others, posing a “serious threat to public safety”.
This investigation began around a year and a half ago, when terrorism experts in Spain detected an individual who was spreading radical jihadist material on social media as well as violently criticising western society. His views aligned with those of the the terrorism group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
The individual, who has now been detained in Cádiz, was well-known in his geographical area for being an extremist and the authorities believe that he is responsible for indoctrinating the three other terrorists arrested in Murcia.
