ARCHIVED - Free of Delta Plus variant: Valencia Covid update October 27
Ministry of Health confirms no cases of the mutated form of coronavirus have been detected in the region, including Alicante province
As the Delta Plus variant takes hold in Britain, and the first cases have been detected in Spain, Valencia's Minister of Health, Ana Barceló, confirmed on Tuesday October 26 that "no cases have been detected in the region" and stressed that if there had been an infection, "the daily sequencing of the virus would have detected it".
At a press conference to report on the progress of the flu vaccination campaign, Barceló maintained the three provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón are currently free of this particular strain, believed to be up to 15% more infectious than the original Delta variant, known as AY.4.2.
The first Delta Plus Covid cases in Spain were reported in Madrid last week, with five infections confirmed on Saturday October 23. But to date, "this is not the case in the Valencia region," stressed the Minister of Health.
However, the region is experiencing a rebound in Covid cases, and is on the verge of 'medium risk' of Covid transmission after the 14-day cumulative incidence rose 5.5 points over the weekend to 49.14 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Monday October 25 – less than one point away from leaving the low transmission zone of less than 50 cases.
