Free TV arrives in Region of Murcia hospital rooms
Before now, patients had to pay to watch television in hospitals in Murcia

For those unlucky enough to be admitted to hospital, the time can pass very slowly, and before now patients in Murcia looking for a little distraction by switching on the TV had to pay for the privilege. But starting on Friday September 15, completely free televisions will be installed in all rooms of every public hospital in the Region of Murcia.
Updating the systems and equipment is a big undertaking, so the service will be made available in stages as the kinks are ironed out. The Regional Hospital of the Northwest in Health Area IV became the first to launch the regional free television project this week, much to the delights of many patients and their visiting family and friends.
“We are especially sensitive to the needs of people who are in a vulnerable situation, and having a free television service will make their stay in hospital more pleasant,” Minister of Health, Juan José Pedreño, said.
The initiative was approved by the Government Council in February 2022, but it’s taken more than a year for the contract to be awarded. The chosen company will look after the reception signal and carry out ongoing maintenance on the units. Over the next few weeks, technicians will replace 1,894 outdated monitors and manage some 2,207 TVs going forward.
Incredibly, before now, the Virgen del Castillo de Yecla Hospital was the only facility in the Region that offered free TV to its patients.
An investment of 3.7 million euros will ensure that people admitted and their visitors have full access to all open TV channels, as well as free low network capacity WiFi. In the future, the government plans to establish a payment service for higher-speed internet connection, as well as the availability of tablets with high-capacity internet access.
