ARCHIVED - French driver in Catalunya fined for carrying children in the boot of his car
The incident took place near Roses in the province of Girona
A 43-year-old Frenchman faces charges after being stopped by traffic police on the roads of Catalunya on Tuesday with two children in the boot of his car, which was open in order to allow them to breathe comfortably.
The incident occurred on the C-260 road in Castelló d’Empúries, just a few kilometres inland from the coastal resorts of Ampuriabrava and Roses in the province of Girona. Alarmed officers of the Mossos d’Esquadra, the regional police force of Catalunya, spotted the legs of the two children as the car travelled between Figueres and Roses and immediately stopped the vehicle, finding on inspection that two more children were inside the car without adequate retention devices, one of them aged just 3.
In consequence, the driver faces a total of six fines including one of reckless driving, totalling 840 euros.
It soon emerged that the occupants of the vehicle were holidaying in an apartment in Roses, and following the intervention of the Mossos the passenger who had been in the co-driver’s seat ferried the children to the coast with a series of journeys back and forth.
