ARCHIVED - Fugitive facing 10 years for fraud in Germany arrested at Alicante airport
The 41-year-old Estonian man was taken into custody after stepping off a flight at Alicante-Elche Airport
The National Police at Alicante-Elche Airport arrested an Estonian man wanted by the German authorities and subject to a European Arrest Warrant for Extradition (EAW) for alleged financial fraud as he stepped off a flight from Kaunas, Lithuania.
According to police sources, the office which liases between the Spanish and other European justice systems alerted colleagues at Alicante airport border control that the fugitive was on board a flight which landed on the Costa Blanca just after 10am on Monday, January 3.
The warrant for the 41-year-old's arrest and extradition was issued by the German authorities on December 17 2021 for allegedly scamming more than 150,000 euros through a fictitious capital investment company.
The detainee, who faces a possible 10-year prison sentence in Germany, has been handed over to the Central Examining Court of the Audiencia Nacional, which will be responsible for organising his extradition.
