ARCHIVED - Glass recycling campaign in Aguilas to provide Christmas presents to children in need
Residents in Águilas, Murcia, have until December 19 to recycle as much glass as possible
The Ecovidrio association has launched a new Christmas-themed campaign in 12 municipalities in the Region of Murcia, including Águilas, giving residents the chance to participate in the charitable initiative to provide toys for children in need.
Ecovidrio is a non-profit organisation in charge of glass recycling across Spain and their latest campaign aims to encourage the public to recycle their glass products, bottles and containers in exchange for a Christmas present for vulnerable children.
The campaign will run from December 7 until December 19 and Ecovidrio has installed several glass igloos decorated with elves and Father Christmas around the municipality of Águilas. In addition, the glass bins have a QR code which can be scanned to provide more information about the initiative.
Glass recycling is extremely beneficial to the environment, as glass is a material which can be completely, 100% recycled. Last year in the Region of Murcia, thanks to glass recycling, it was possible to avoid the emission of 16,506 tonnes of CO2, avoid the extraction of 34,262 tonnes of prime materials and save a whopping 20,391 MWH of energy, which is equivalent to the energy consumption of all of the hospitals in the Region of Murcia during a two-month period.
In Águilas, during 2020, a total of 741 tonnes of glass were recycled, around 20.8 kilograms per inhabitant, which is four points above the national average.
