ARCHIVED - Goat farmer banned from owning animals following abuse charge
Three of the five dogs, found on a farm in Andalucia, did not survive despite receiving extensive veterinary care
A court in Málaga has sentenced a goat farmer in the Andalucía town of Casabermeja to one year and one day in prison for keeping his five dogs in truly deplorable conditions. In addition to the custodial sentence, the man is prohibited from owning or working with animals for a period of three years and one day.
Casabermeja Ladram animal association initially lodged a complaint against the farmer in 2018 and a short time later the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) saw the animals for themselves, who were showing “clear symptoms of abandonment and lack of care”.
Three of the dogs did not survive despite being rushed to the vet by rescuers, and all of the animals suffered from numerous health problems including canine leishmaniosis, a fatal disease transmitted by mosquitos. Most of the dogs didn’t have microchips and one of the animals displayed the unmistakable signs of being physically abused by humans.
The judge ordered the goat farmer to pay 7,000 euros in expenses for the veterinary treatment of the dogs, who had to be separated and isolated because the risk of contagion was so high.
