ARCHIVED - Granada town will pay for taxis to keep lone females safe at fiestas
Maracena Town Council in Andalucia will cover the cost of lifts home for females from August 12 to 16
Faced with the increase in attacks on women in recent years, Maracena in Granada has come up with an initiative to try to ensure that women get home safe and sound during its patron saint festivities this month.
The local authority will foot the bill for taxis home for all women who request it during the festivities from August 12 to 16.
As part of the agreement with PideTaxi, women can apply for a taxi voucher at the Violeta Point in the Recinto Ferial, located near the nightclubs. Once they have the ticket, they can call PideTaxi (958 280 000) to arrange for a pick-up.
The 100% subsidised service is available from 10pm to 6am, and once the taxi and passenger have reached their destination, the driver will wait to make sure the woman is safely inside her home before leaving.
"We are fighting for the women of our town to be able to experience the fiestas and leisure activities without fear, with freedom and empowerment", said the council in a statement.
