ARCHIVED - Greenpeace hangs banner on Triana bridge in Seville urging council to implement environmental pollution plan
Pollution is a big problem in the city in Andalusia, where the average temperature has risen by two degrees over the last 50 years.
Greenpeace activists took over Triana bridge in Seville on Monday morning (19 April) to hang up a huge banner urging the council to get a move on and bring in the ‘Plan Respira’ as promised, the aim being to reduce pollution levels by restricting access to motor vehicle traffic in the city's busiest two areas; the centre and the Triana district.
The project was presented last autumn, and environmental groups suggested improvements, but so far there has been no response or announcement from the council about when restrictions will come into force, Greenpeace has complained.
Suggestions include encouraging the use of public transport, which plummeted when the pandemic began, and increasing green areas to counteract the damage caused by climate change. The average temperature in Seville has increased by two degrees since the early 70s, studies have found, and the city faces four main threats: increased heatwaves, drought, rainfall floods and river floods, all of which must be dealt with before it’s too late, environmentalists stress.
