ARCHIVED - High temperature warning for the Guadalentín Valley, Lorca and Águilas on Thursday
Temperatures set to hit 38 degrees in several municipalities of the Murcia region
So far this year July has produced some challenging weather in the Region of Murcia, with scorching heatwaves making way for cooler temperatures, only for the thermometers to swing right back up again. As indeed will be the case on Thursday, July 22, according to the State Meteorological Service, Aemet in the Guadalentín Valley, Lorca and Águilas, where a yellow weather warning has been put in place between the hours of 2pm and 9pm for extreme high temperatures, which are expected to reach a blistering 38 degrees.
In addition, the Preventative Action Plan against the Effects of Excessive Temperatures on Health has been set to level 1, index 1 throughout the week. This means that experts expect the thermometers to reach the maximum temperature threshold of 34 degrees, and possibly even exceed it on Saturday.
Murcia isn’t the only place to expect a scorcher over the next few days, as much of Spain is in for higher than normal temperatures, as predicted by Aemet back in June.
Climatology experts at the University of Alicante have predicted temperatures to climb as high as 44 degrees on Wednesday, July 21, sparking the province’s third heatwave so far this year.
Throughout the rest of Spain, a warm air mass from the North of Africa is due to reach the mainland on Wednesday and could see temperatures climbing to a breathtaking 42 degrees in some parts of the country as the weekend approaches.
With the yellow weather warning in place, the Murcia Health Department has issued a series of guidelines to keep people safe in the extreme heat, which include avoiding direct sun exposure wherever possible, drinking plenty of water and staying out of the sun during the hotter hours of the day.
