ARCHIVED - Historic Cartagena gun batteries for sale to private investors!
Interest has been expressed in converting the Fajardo battery into a luxury hotel
It is reported in regional newspaper La Verdad that the Town Hall of Cartagena is prepared to sell off some of the old gun batteries and military barracks located along the coastline to private investors in order for them to be re-invented as tourist accommodation and attractions.
Entrepreneur Tomás Olivo is reported to be looking into the possibilities of acquiring the Fajardo gun battery on the western side of the entrance to the port of Cartagena with a view to converting it into a luxury hotel with magnificent views, potentially taking advantage of a proposal for the Ministry of Defence to cede the monument to the Town Hall in order for it to be deployed as a tourist attraction.
At the same time, Mayoress Ana Belén Castejón is quoted as saying that “various companies have expressed an interest in our coastal batteries”, hinting that others could be up for sale if, as she hopes, agreement is reached with the Ministry. In the meantime, though, the condition of many of the buildings continues to deteriorate as the arguments over who is responsible for their upkeep rumble on.
Should these plans come to fruition, other batteries which could one day become major tourist accommodation premises include those of Castillitos and El Jorel on Cabo Tiñoso, close to La Azohía, and La Podadera, not far from the guns of Fajardo alongside the natural harbour of Cartagena!
