ARCHIVED - Homeless man beaten to death in Malaga
Investigators believe the beggar was bludgeoned to death with a stone in a park in Malaga, Andalucía
A 64-year-old homeless man of Bulgarian nationality has died after receiving a blow to the head while sleeping rough on a bench in the Picasso Gardens in Malaga.
A woman passing through the park discovered the victim lying in a pool of blood shortly after 9am on Tuesday November 30 and alerted the emergency services. The man was rushed to the Regional Hospital of Malaga in a critical condition where he underwent surgery for a serious head wound, but he sadly died a short time later.
A post mortem has been carried out on the body and the Homicide Group of the National Police are investigating whether the victim could have been bludgeoned with a rock, which was discovered at the scene.
The forensic examination has confirmed that the beggar died a violent death and although no arrests have been made, two hypotheses are being pursued: that the murder occurred as a result of a previous argument with another homeless person or that the victim may have been the target of a hate crime.
According to the Professional Association of Social Work of Malaga, homeless people are known to "suffer one of the most extreme situations of social exclusion" and, in fact, "there are infrequent episodes of discrimination and violence".
Cáritas Diocesana has also issued a statement on December 1 to express its "deep" pain over the death and to show its solidarity with the victim's relatives. The organisation hopes that "the facts will be clarified as soon as possible and the perpetrators will answer to justice".
