ARCHIVED - Hospital admissions rebound in Alicante: Valencia Covid update June 29
Health experts fear hospitalisations will continue to rise on the Costa Blanca over the coming week
The number of people hospitalised with Covid has rebounded significantly in Alicante and the rest of the Valencia region following the San Juan bonfire celebrations (June 23/24).
As experts warn Spain could well be in the grip of a seventh wave, new infections have fallen slightly in the Valencia region, having risen steadily over the last fortnight, but hospitalisations have leapt by more than 200 in four days to 905.
In Alicante province, 81 people are being treated for the virus at the General Hospital of Alicante Doctor Balmis compared to 60 in the middle of last week, and just six during the same period in 2021. And whilst operations have not been suspended, this could be an "imminent measure given the rate at which these admissions are occurring".
Currently, 5.5% of hospital beds in the Valencian Community are occupied by patients with Covid, which places the region at medium risk. The situation in intensive care units is more positive, with 3.3% of the beds occupied.
The increase in serious cases has been accompanied by a rise in sales of antigen tests. In pharmacies such as Tomás Lloret's in Alicante, 300 were sold on Monday June 27; 50 were dispensed on the previous Monday.
Coronavirus cases
The regional Ministry of Health has confirmed 4,479 new cases since Friday June 24 when 4,812 were reported, a sharp rise on the 3,853 infections reported a week ago.
By provinces: 577 in Castellón (179,812 in total), 1,251 in Alicante (503,021 in total) and 2,651 in Valencia (785,475 in total).
Of these new cases, 2,210 are people over 60 years of age (a continued rise on the 2,085 reported last Friday and 1,834 confirmed on June 21): Of the new cases over the four-day period, 340 are registered in Castellón, 634 in Alicante and 1,236 in Valencia.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 905 Covid patients in hospitals across the Valencia region, 203 more than last Friday, 35 of them in the ICU (two less): 126 in the province of Castellón, 4 in the ICU; 300 in the province of Alicante, 16 of them in the ICU; and 479 in the province of Valencia, 15 in the ICU.
Fatalities
Four deaths have been reported since Friday, all of which occurred within the last seven days - two men aged 84 and 85-years-old and two women aged between 88 and 96. This brings the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 9,520: 1,121 in the province of Castellón, 3,616 in the province of Alicante and 4,783 in the province of Valencia.
