ARCHIVED - Hospitalisations stabilise as incidence continues to climb: Spain Covid update October 5
Covid incidence in Spain is 25 points higher than in mid-September when the lowest rates were recorded
The arrival of October has signalled a coronavirus resurgence all across Spain, with most communities reporting a significant increase in the last few days. The national incidence rate at 14 days is climbing, and the data released by the Ministry of Health on Tuesday October 4 show that it’s 25 points higher than in mid-September.
On the positive side, this increase isn’t reflected in hospital occupancy, which is still low and close to the numbers seen in the last week of August – around 159 patients per 100,000 inhabitants.
Coronavirus infections
According to the Ministry, 18,835 new coronavirus infections have been registered in the last week, which brings the total number of positive cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,431,098.
Cumulative incidence rate
Most worrying is the 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60. After jumping eight points to land at 149.80 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last update, another six notches have been added since last Friday, with the figure now reaching 155.50.
The 7-day incidence rate in citizens aged 60 or over has also experienced another increase, rising from 75.06 cases to 78.49.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 212.10 cases, followed by septuagenarians (175.10), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (111.90). All of these age groups have, unfortunately, noted an increase since the last report.
Looking at the incidence by autonomous community, the enclave of Ceuta continues to have the best figures, remaining at 39.54 cases this week.
It’s followed by Andalucia, with an incidence rate of 78.90 and Navarra, which has seen a big drop from 101.07 cases on Friday to 97.03 today.
The Valencian Community is hovering right around the national average, with an incidence rate of 155.81 cases per 100,000.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Despite the increase in infections, hospital occupancy remains stable.
Today, 1.6% of intensive care beds are occupied by Covid patients, while general occupancy has remained at a steady 2%.
A further 47 Covid-related fatalities were reported in Tuesday’s update, bringing the overall death toll in Spain to 114,262 people.
The community experiencing the most hospital pressure is La Rioja, with an occupancy rate of 4.22%, more than double the national average. This is followed by the Basque Country (3.15%) and Castilla y Leon (3.12%).
On the other end of the scale is Extremadura, with just 0.40% of its beds occupied because of Covid.
Regarding intensive care, the most precarious situation is occurring in the Basque Country (3.06%), followed by Castilla y Leon (2.80%).
Vaccination data
As of October 5, 92.8% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,155,608 people have now received two doses.
In addition, 39,267,154 people (93.1%) have had at least one dose.
