May day looms and with it another Bank Holiday, so prepare for disruption as the next week is peppered with events and activities.
Although the 1st May is the Bank Holiday, it falls on a Tuesday, and the day of the crosses of May is on the 3rd, a Thursday, which means that the events and celebrations which traditionally revolve around these dates are split between two weekends, the main bulk of them on the 5th and 6th May. Next weekend will be another getaway weekend for families, so the hostelry trade is hoping for good weather.

We start this week with the Fiestas of Los Mayos in Alhama de Murcia. These have three distinct elements : the crosses of May, decorated with flowers and plants, Los Mayos, satyrical figures and scenes positioned throughout the town, poking fun at the the establishment and the Corremayos, townspeople dressed in colourful jesters outfits , visiting the crosses and Mayos en masse. Mix in a folk festival, custom bikers do, artesan market, fair, music and food to create a colourful, vibrant fiesta which is unique in the region and very popular with ex-pat visitors..

The Fiestas of the Vera Cruz and Wine Horses are taking place in Caravaca de la Cruz this weekend with the Running of the Wine Horses on the 2nd May and the colourful Moors and Christians Fiestas to follow.
There are also the Fiestas of San Marcos in Bullas and El Estrecho in Fuente Álamo, as well as artesan fairs in Cehegín, Blanca and the 3 day Roman artesan event in Alhama for the start of Los Mayos.
Torre Pacheco is celebrating its Fiestas of the Miller this weekend and San Javier has a busy weekend of stomping, strutting and tapas at the Santiago de la Ribera Feria of Sevillanas.
Calasparra is also celebrating with the Romería of the Virgen de la Esperanza on the 1st May and Águilas has its Romería to the windmill of El Saltaor as well..
There are still more events to add for next weekend, with Mula, Lorca and Cartagena also busy and there are some superb concerts for May in Murcia´s auditoriums.

Next weekend there´s Motocross at Alhama and the big Custom motorcycle event this weekend, as well as sailing on the Mar Menor with SAMM ( new sailing enthusiasts always wanted) as well as Golf and walking to enjoy..

Finally the news.
From feast to famine. Last week it was impossible trying to cope with the volume, this week it was difficult to find any news apart from political squabbling.
The main focus of all the bickering were the Health Service reforms and not only clarification of the increases in prescription charges, but a change in the laws which have left many foreigners without the health care they have been receiving to date. There are a lot of implications, even for expats living here and many questions unanswered as to what the true long-term effects of the legislation are. One thing is for clear, this hardening of attitudes towards foreigners is designed to stop what the government are calling abusive "health tourism" and save billions in the process.
The severity of the economic situation facing Spain has also dominated the news, as both Spain and the UK officially re-enter recession. This can´t do anything other than impact on the housing market and the jobs market, with austerity drives biting deep as the Government continues to introduce new measures aimed at reducing Spain´s deficit.
One of the knock on effects being that Corvera airport will not now have the promised AVE rail link in the foreseeable future.
