ARCHIVED - How much will petrol and diesel cost in Murcia next year?
The government of Spain has scrapped the fuel discount for most drivers from January 2023
It was nice while it lasted, but the novelty of filling up our cars on the cheap is set to come to an end in the coming days as the Spanish government has confirmed it will be eliminating the 20 cent per litre fuel bonus after December 31.
Drivers were naturally hoping for an extension on the measure, which originally came into force on April 1 and has already been prolonged once, but fuel prices across Spain have been consistently dropping for several weeks now and President Sanchez has decided to limit the discount to certain professional sectors, including transport, agriculture, livestock and fishing.
How much will we pay for fuel next year?
It’s impossible to predict exactly how much petrol and diesel will cost in January when the fuel discount is scrapped, since the price fluctuates daily. However, based on the current figures in the Region of Murcia and elsewhere, it’s possible to make an educated guess.
On December 27, a litre of unleaded was being sold for 1.573 euros while diesel was slightly more expensive at 1.734. When the fuel bonus is included, it cost an average of 68.65 euros to fill a regular 50 litre petrol tank and 76.70 euros in the case of diesel cars.
Looking ahead to January 1, without the government discount, the average tank will cost around 10 euros more for a fill.
The move will no doubt come as a major blow to most motorists who don’t rely on transport to make a living, but there is some positive news on the horizon for the average household. With food inflation surpassing 15% this year, the government has implemented VAT cuts that should drastically reduce the cost of shopping. For many staple items like bread, milk, eggs and cheese, this tax will be eliminated altogether while VAT on pasta and oil will be dropped to 5% for the next six months.
