ARCHIVED - Incidence plummets by a further 90 points: Spain Covid update August 17
Daily infections across Spain have also dropped significantly since last week
The coronavirus pandemic continues to loosen its grip on Spain with the cumulative incidence rate dropping for the fifth consecutive week and the 7-day rate even falling under 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Every community in the country is showing positive signs, with each region now below the 600-case barrier.
Cumulative incidence rate
For the fifth consecutive week, the cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has dropped, with the 14-day figure decreasing by another 90 points in the latest health report to stand at 246.45 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on August 16, compared to 336.05 last Tuesday.
The 7-day incidence also continues to decline, going from 107 cases to 99, which indicates that the number of infections should continue to drop in the coming days.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 373.23 cases, followed by septuagenarians (250.99), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (170.06). The incidence rate in all of these age groups has steadily declined in recent days.
Andalucia continues to be the community with the lowest incidence rate by far, a trend which it has maintained throughout the seventh wave (141.86 cases). Every region has now dropped below the 600-case threshold.
Coronavirus infections
The autonomous communities notified the Ministry of Health in Spain of 12,161 new coronavirus infections on Tuesday August 16, a healthy reduction on the 14,373 cases registered on the same day last week. Of the new infections, 11,083 have been diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
In the past two weeks, a total of 30,358 positives have been registered in this age group.
The total number of infections recorded in Spain since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic has now risen to 13,306,301.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 5,128 patients hospitalised with Covid throughout Spain (down from 6,043 last Tuesday), 354 of whom are being treated for more serious conditions in the country’s ICUs (down from 392).
This means that 4.4% of all hospital beds are being used by Covid patients (down from 5.16%) while 4.2% of ICU places are occupied by people with coronavirus (down from 4.6%).
According to the Ministry of Health, 181 Covid-related fatalities have been reported in the last week, bringing the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 111,906.
Covid testing
Between August 6 and 12, the autonomous communities have carried out 79,883 diagnostic tests in people over 60 years of age, with an overall rate per 100,000 inhabitants of 648.50.
Meanwhile, the positivity rate stands at 28.84%, up from 25.85% last Tuesday. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that this figure be below 5% to consider the spread of the virus as 'controlled'.
Vaccination data
As of August 17, 92.8% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,139,014 people have now received two doses.
So far, 39,254,922 have received at least one dose, 93.1% of the population over 12 years of age.
