ARCHIVED - Incidence rate exceeds 555 in over 60s: Spain Covid update April 25
The number of people admitted to the ICU in Spain has dropped in the last 2 weeks
Spain is entering its first full week with perhaps the last of the major Covid restrictions abolished – indoor masks. The removal of the measure marked a move towards a period of new normal in this country and was agreed upon due to the positive evolution of the virus; however, the data of recent weeks has been far from encouraging.
Coronavirus statistics were held back during Easter week in Spain, as is common during national holidays, and so the best comparison available is from two weeks ago, on April 8; what is clearly shown is that infections, the average incidence and hospitalisations are on the increase, although ICU admissions are falling, indicating that, while still prevalent, coronavirus isn’t leading to such serious illnesses as before.
Cumulative incidence rate & coronavirus infections
On Friday April 22, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate for people over the age of 60 stood at 555 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This is a sharp increase of 135 points in the last two weeks, since no coronavirus data was released on April 15, Good Friday.
Among the older populations, the highest incidence rate by far has been registered in those aged 80 years and over, at 731 cases.
By communities, Madrid maintains the lowest 14-day rate with just 291 cases, followed by Andalucía with 316. On the other end of the scale, the communities registering the highest rates are Asturias (1,129), Galicia (1,123) and Navarra (1,211).
An additional 49,149 new cases of coronavirus have been detected in those aged 60 and over since the last Ministry of Health update on Tuesday April 19, an increase on the 35,456 infections reported on that date.
Hospitalisations and Fatalities
Across all of the age groups, 6,119 people were hospitalised for Covid on Friday April 22, a considerable increase on the 4,217 admissions on the same day 2 weeks ago. There are 339 people being treated in Spain’s ICUs for more serious symptoms, down from 371 on April 8.
These figures mean that 4.94% of hospital beds across the country are occupied by Covid patients (up from 3.40%); in intensive care, this percentage has dropped from 4.08% to 3.76%.
Since April 8, a further 804 Covid-related fatalities have been reported in Spain, which brings the overall death toll since the beginning of the pandemic to 103,908.
Vaccination data
As of April 22, a total of 39,033,917 people, representing 92.5% of the population over the age of 12 are now double jabbed. In addition, 39,210,144 people, or 92.9%, have had at least one vaccine.
