ARCHIVED - Incidence rate stagnates as Covid causes 50 more deaths in Spain
Hospital patient numbers continue to fall as the vaccination campaign rolls on
Despite the general optimism regarding the developments of the coronavirus pandemic in Spain the latest Ministry of Health update published on Thursday evening showed only a minimal decrease in the 14-day accumulated incidence rate, with the figure falling from 118.5 to 118.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
In many regions the rate of infection fell, but in others the numbers are rising again and in La Rioja the latest data report a rate of 207, up from 186 just 24 hours previously. Also in the “high risk” tranche above 150 are the regions of Andalucía, Madrid, the Basque Country and the north African enclave of Melilla, although the region of Aragón fell below that threshold on Thursday.
At the other end of the scale the lowest rates are still to be found in the Comunidad Valenciana (36.3), the Balearics (40.3) and Galicia (63.7).
At the same time, the number of Covid patients receiving hospital treatment continues to fall, now accounting for only 3.47 per cent of occupied hospital beds, while the equivalent figure in intensive care units stands at 12.57 per cent although it is still above 25 per cent in the region of Madrid (26.7%): in the Comunidad Valenciana and Galicia this indicator is below 3 per cent.
The Thursday bulletin reports a further 50 fatalities, taking the official Ministry of Health death toll since February 2020 up to 80.099.
