ARCHIVED - Infections drop with a slight increase in incidence: Spain Covid update May 24
Coronavirus infections have dipped compared to the same day last week as hospital pressure eases in Spain
Spain continues to take steps towards a new normal as the pandemic pressure eases, and this week the government announced that, thanks to increasingly favourable data, unvaccinated tourists from non-EU countries will finally be allowed to enter Spain with just a negative test.
The news comes after several weeks of see-sawing Covid figures but the latest data show that infections have dropped by 10,000 in a week while hospital pressure has also eased slightly.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health in Spain reported 58,839 new coronavirus infections in its latest report published on Friday May 20, 27,804 of which were diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
This is a decrease on the 68,234 cases registered on the same day the previous week, and brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 12,238,073.
Cumulative incidence rate
The average incidence in people over 60 years stands at 848.62 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the last 14 days, having dropped slightly from 846.55 on Tuesday.
In the past two weeks, a total of 104,553 positives have been registered in this age group.
By autonomous community, Andalucía continues to register the lowest 14-day incidence at 543 cases, but this is still a big jump from the 499 cases reported on the same day the previous week.
At the other end of the scale, the North African enclave of Ceuta has the highest figure, standing at 1,943.
The incidence rate in the Region of Murcia has dropped to 1,367.77 cases per 100,000 inhabitants while the Valencian Community comes in under the Spanish national average, with 702.11 cases.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 7,364 patients hospitalised with Covid throughout Spain (down from 7,558 on Tuesday) while 364 people are being treated for more serious symptoms in the country’s ICUs (363 on Tuesday).
With this data, 5.94% of all hospital beds are now filled with coronavirus patients (down from 6.10%) while ICU occupancy is at 4.07%.
A further 305 Covid-related fatalities were registered in Friday’s report, compared to 321 on the previous Friday.
This brings the overall death toll since the health crisis began to 105,947.
Covid testing
Between May 10 and 16, the autonomous communities have carried out 194,300 diagnostic tests in people over 60 years of age.
Vaccination data
As of May 24, a total of 39,065,681 people, representing 92.6% of the population over the age of 12 are now double jabbed. In addition, 39,225,567 people, or 93%, have had at least one vaccine.
