January 26 Mountain walk and gastronomic tasting in Coy on the high plateau of northern Lorca

ARCHIVED ARTICLE -

The second in a series of 6 events exploring the countryside and gastronomy of the vast municipality of Lorca

January 26 Mountain walk and gastronomic tasting in Coy on the high plateau of northern LorcaDuring the first four months of 2025 the Town Hall of Lorca and the local hostelries association Hostelor are promoting a series of weekend country walks which incorporate food and drink as part of the program, visiting various of the outlying villages and districts in the huge municipality.

Registration for all of the events is through the Hostelor website here and places are limited: book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment!

(On the first screen, first select "SI" at the bottom to accept the privacy policy, then click "SIGUIENTE" to move onto the second screen, where personal data must be supplied. You will receive a confirmation email. Bookings close on January 24 at 14.00.)

January 26 Mountain walk and gastronomic tasting in Coy on the high plateau of northern LorcaThe first event is being held on Sunday January 26 on the high plateau of northern Lorca, on the way to Caravaca, in the village and district of Coy, beginning at 9.00 outside the Albergue Casa Grande (see map). The participation fee is 5 euros (to be paid at the start of the walk) and includes a tasting of various local products.

The route is an easy one of around 8 kilometres, accessible for families with children, and is expected to last 3 hours or so. Of course, snacks and drinking water are highly recommended, as is appropriate footwear!

Walkers will leave the village passing the church of San José and climbing the Cerro del Calvario along the traditional Via Crucis route, which is held every Easter Week and leads to the small chapel of El Calvario. From here there are lovely views out over the village and the surrounding mountains of the Sierras of sierras de Ponce, Laxia, Cerres and Cambrón, standing on the boundaries with Cehegin and Mula.

From here the walk continues to the “Cañada Encantada” and the hill of Cerro de las Viñas, which reaches 913mabove sea level and is home to remains of an ancient Argaric settlement, probably dating to around 2000 BC (this climb is optional but the news make it worthwhile for those who make the effort!).

From here the path heads to the Cañada de las Viñas and the path between Doña Inés and Coy, taking a right turn to see the Era del Centeno and the Parque de la Sima before returning to Coy.

At the end of the season of walks there is a prize draw for those who post photos on social media (@hostelorca on Instagram and @hostelor on Facebook, Twitter and Tiktok).

The remaining events in the series are in La Parroquia (February 9), Morata (February 23), La Hoya (March 9), La Torrecilla (March 23) and Puntas de Calnegre (April 6).

The rich and extensive history of Lorca has left a legacy of archaeological sites, and historic buildings, around which the modern city has built its tourism industry. Among these are Lorca Castle, the Jewish quarter of the castle and synagogue, Plaza de España, Colegiata de San Patricio, Museo de Arqueologico Municipal, Iglesia de San Francisco, Casa Huerto Ruano, Palacio de Guevara, Iglesia de San Mateo, Pósito de los Panaderos, Convento Virgen de las Huertas, Antiguo Convento de la Merced, Iglesia del Carmen and the Teatro Guerra.

Lorca Tourist OfficeUnfortunately Lorca has also been prone to natural disaster, suffering a Gota Fría on September 28th 2012, as well as two earthquakes measuring 5.3 and 5.5 on the Richter scale on 11th May 2011, claiming 9 lives. Since this earthquake the city has been rebuilding, winning recognition for its Lorca, Open for Restoration initiative, which used the restoration of the city as a tourist attraction whilst it rebuilt its historical buildings, some of which are currently still not open.

The tourist office relocated for 14 years to Calle San Patricio, near the church, but has now returned to its former premises alongside the Palacio de Guevara in the Plaza Concha Sandoval, or Plaza de la Bordadora (click for map).

Lorca also has an area of coastline incorporating the Parque Regional de Cabo Cope - Puntas de Calnegre, in the Sierra de Almenara, which includes the beaches of Puntas de Calnegre, Baño de las Mujeres, San Pedro, El Siscal, Cala Honda, Cuartel del Ciscar, Junquera, Cala de la Gruta, Cala Leña, Los Hierros, Cala Blanca and Playa Larga, although many are accessible only along difficult tracks or by boat!

However, in spite of its many attractions, the name of Lorca is synonymous with Easter, (Semana Santa) its biblical parades of International Tourist Interest status and famous throughout Spain. The week includes a series of processions in which the Whites (Paso Blanco) and Blues (Paso Azúl) try to outdo each other with the magnificence of their embroideries and the skill and daring of their horsemen.

Lorca also has a Parador hotel, located within the historic castle.

Opening hours for Lorca tourist office:

Every day of the year apart from 1st and 6th January and 25th December, 10.00 to 14.00 and 16.30 to 18.30 (except Sunday afternoons).

These opening times are often extended and other information points created during the Semana Santa celebrations.
