ARCHIVED - Kidnapper of 11-year-old boy in France over a debt is arrested on the Costa del Sol
The alleged captor has been detained in Fuengirola, Malaga
In a joint operation with French authorities, the National Police in Fuengirola have arrested a man suspected of kidnapping an 11-year-old boy in France who was held hostage over a debt allegedly racked up by the child's father.
The young boy was taken from his home town of Saint-Quentin in October 2021 and released 48 hours later after his captors demanded the debt be settled.
The French authorities arrested three French nationals in May and discovered one of the main perpetrators had fled to Spain's Costa del Sol.
A European Investigation Order (EIO) was issued and the National Police in Malaga launched an investigation focusing their enquiries in the coastal town of Fuengirola.
"Investigators found that the fugitive was taking extreme security measures to avoid detection, which made it difficult to find his exact location," said the police in a statement.
However, despite his efforts, police closed in on a property in the town and he was arrested carrying false documentation and 30,000 euros in 50-euro notes.
According to the French authorities, the detainee was a dangerous criminal involved in drug trafficking. A Malaga court ordered the alleged kidnapper be remanded in prison pending extradition to France.
