The towns around the Mar Menor and Cartagena are preparing their beaches and green areas for the Easter holidays
The beaches of the coast of Cartagena are almost ready for Easter, with workers from the Coastal Department finalising their cleaning and maintenance work to welcome tourists planning to come and enjoy their holidays in the sun this Semana Santa season.Around forty workers divided into teams have been working for weeks in the streets, green areas and on the beaches of Cartagena’s coastal towns, to prepare them for the good weather that is forecast for Easter week. The Region of Murcia is expecting almost all its hotel and tourist accommodation places to be filled this Easter, meaning it is doubly important for the beaches to be ready to receive so many tourists. However, the environmental group Pacto por el Mar Menor has claimed that the process of shifting sand from the seabed of the Mar Menor and moving it onto the beach – as Los Alcázares, San Javier, Cartagena and San Pedro del Pinatar are doing – is harmful for the protected lagoon’s ecosystem. As well as shoring up and smoothing down the sand, the beach areas of La Manga and Cabo de Palos are placing footpaths, showers for washing feet and shady areas along the entire coastline.A spokesperson for Cartagena city council said, “In this way we respond to the needs of tourists that visit us, making our beaches ready so that they can enjoy the first swim of the season (at least for the bravest).”Images: Ayuntamiento de Cartagena
