ARCHIVED - Largest glass recycling igloo in the world unveiled in Valencia
A dozen smaller igloos will also be located across Valencia city on the Costa Blanca throughout June.
The world's largest glass recycling igloo has been unveiled in Valencia to mark the XXXVIII European Women's Basketball Championship, which is being co-hosted by the city this month, and to raise awareness about 'green' issues.
The eight-metre tall recycling bin is adorned with the colours of the Spanish women's basketball team, current title holders, who will compete in Valencia and the French cities, Lyon and Paris between June 17 and 27.
The Spanish Basketball Federation is supporting a nationwide recycling campaign to promote the "importance of the world of sport making a commitment to sustainability and green policies".
Since 2015, the recycling of glass in Valencia has increased by eight per cent, from 12.1 million kilos of packaging in 2015 to more than 13.1 kilos in 2020.
And the leap in recycling has been attributed to "public awareness", together with annual campaigns and a 32 per cent increase in glass recycling bins across the city, from 2,047 six years ago to 2,710.
The giant recycling igloo is located in Valencia Town Hall Square, with other smaller versions at the La Fontera sports facilities, next to the Queen Sofia Palace of Arts, the Palace of Music and the Mercado de Colón, amongst other place.
