Over double the average June rainfall was recorded in the Balearics
One of the wettest springs on record ended in Spain ended with the second wettest June of the 21st century, with an average of 49.8 millimetres falling in mainland areas.
This is 47 per cent higher than the historical average for the month, while in the Balearic islands, although the total was lower at 28.2 millimetres, the figure doubled the June average. In the Canaries the minimal total of 2.2 mm was in line with the average.
As the Aemet map shows, rainfall was heavier than usual in large areas of the country, the main exceptions being Andalucía and most of Catalunya, while at least twice the usual June total was recorded in parts of Zamora, Salamanca, Guadalajara, Cuenca, Zaragoza, Tarragona, Almería, Granada and the Balearics. The wettest place in Spain was Hondarribia/Malkarroa in the Basque Country with 246 mm.
In terms of temperature, average or close to average conditions prevailed in Spain as a whole during June, although the month is classified as having been very warm in parts of Castilla y León and central Andalucía as well as the Balearics.
