Lorca brings back bankrupt public building body Suvilor after 10 years
The construction company in the Murcia town, which went bust 9 years ago, is to begin building new homes again

The Lorca City Council has brought ownership of the municipal housing construction company Suelo y Vivienda de Lorca (Suvilor) back under public control, after being in liquidation since 2012. The public-owned construction company went under almost a decade ago, but has now paid off all its debts and can once again be made functional.
Suvilor will build small real estate developments, and will focus on building new public housing, according to Lorca mayor Diego José Mateos, while sales of new homes in the Murcia region have grown. However, council members have stressed that the public nature of Suvilor will not damage business for private companies, with Mr Mateos saying he wants it “to be useful, but not a competition for construction companies”. For this reason it will be mainly focussed on building subsidised housing in Lorca.
“Suvilor should be an agile and operational tool,” he continued, which can be used “to revitalise depressed areas” such as Lorca’s old town.
Back in 2012, Suvilor went bust due to overstretching and building large property developments that failed to meet demand during the construction crisis. Lorca council now wants the process of reactivating the company to be completed by the last quarter of this year, so that it can be fully operational by the beginning of 2022.
