Although Aemet is not expecting any more significant weather events in the Murcia region during September, the autumn normally brings the prospect of torrential downpours along the Mediterranean coastline, which can cause flash flooding in localised areas.
For this reason councils in areas historically affected by flooding due to their geographical layout habitually clear ramblas and water run-offs in case of a major weather incident and this is the case in Lorca which is preparing for the autumn by clearing the rambla Ylorci, located in the outlying district of Tercia.
The clearing of canes, which have a habit of growing abundantly in waterways and clogging them up, creating potential blockages which can lead to ramblas bursting their banks when large volumes of debris are carried along during heavy storms is now underway and has already been completed in the ramblas of Las Chatas, Los Peñones, Las Señoritas and el Cementerio and the CHS (Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura) has also been requested by the town hall to ensure that all of the waterways under its control are clear well in advance of the rainy season.
Just a week ago neighbouring Águilas was hit by a flash flood, causing an estimated million euro’s worth of damage, with several vehicles carried away in the rambla.
