ARCHIVED - Lorca prepares for possible snowfall
Snowplough teams and two tonnes of salt are on standby in the Murcia town
Snow fell at the highest altitudes of Sierra Espuña in the Region of Murcia at the weekend, and whilst no official alert for snowfall has been activated in Lorca, the town council’s Emergency Service has a snowplough and two tonnes of salt on standby just incase.
Councillor for Emergencies, Isabel Casalduero, explained that everything has been in place weeks in anticipation of heavy snowfall.
“We have the snowplough in Zarcilla de Ramos and two tonnes of salt to spread on the roads to prevent ice. Everything is ready in case we have to intervene.
“The logistics are concentrated at the Zarcilla de Ramos Emergency Centre, and from there, the inclement weather that can occur in the higher districts is dealt with.”
For the majority of the rest of the Region, rain and winds are forecast for this week but it should get warmer going in to next weekend.
Snow is not uncommon in places such as Coy, Aviles, Doña Inés, La Paca and Zarcilla de Ramos, which is why the bulk of the salt is stored there.
