Lorca's fibromyalgia association celebrates brighter future with renewed town support

Ayuntamiento renews AFILOR’s lease on its larger La Viña headquarters, giving stability and space for vital therapies and support

Lorca's fibromyalgia association celebrates brighter future with renewed town supportThe Lorca Association of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue (AFILOR) has taken what its president, Antonia Robles, describes as “a giant leap forward” after the Ayuntamiento renewed the lease on its expanded headquarters in the La Viña neighbourhood.

Located at 6 Jardineros Street, the 130-square-metre premises were provided by the Lorca Ayuntamiento and have become a welcoming hub for more than 200 members living with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. The new space, which more than doubles the size of their previous 50-square-metre location, has allowed the association to widen its range of therapies and support services for users and their families.

Mayor Fulgencio Gil, who visited the centre on Thursday February 12 alongside Councillor for NGOs Belén Díaz and AFILOR’s president, said, “We continue to take firm steps to make Lorca increasingly accessible and inclusive. Renewing this lease demonstrates our commitment to strengthening local associations like AFILOR, which provide essential support to those who need it most.”

During the visit, the mayor also highlighted that this initiative responds to long-standing requests from the association and fits within the Ayuntamiento’s 2032 Framework Commitment to promote social policies that improve citizens’ quality of life.

“We continue working to ensure that everyone has real opportunities for participation and well-being,” he added.

AFILOR’s president, Antonia Robles, expressed her gratitude to the council for renewing the agreement. She explained that the enlarged venue has enabled the association to offer better conditions for therapies and workshops, including adapted exercise sessions, craft activities, support groups and new initiatives such as individual physiotherapy and psychology sessions.

There is also a new office and meeting room for talks and personal attention, as well as a group programme called ‘Un café y una reflexión’ (‘A coffee and a reflection’), designed to help members express their emotions in a supportive atmosphere.

“These facilities have become a refuge for people facing difficult times,” Robles said. “Our aim is to give a better quality of life to those living with fibromyalgia. The day-to-day can be hard, but here everyone feels understood and supported.”

Mayor Gil concluded his visit by thanking AFILOR’s members for their “daily work to improve the quality of life of their users” and reaffirmed the Ayuntamiento’s continuing support for local organisations that play such an important social role.
